Bromsgrove Lib Dems signal it's time for rail improvements
Local Lib Dem campaigners Janet King, Rob Hunter and Siobhan Hughes have called for more ambitious improvements to public transport networks across Bromsgrove.
Responding to Worcestershire County Council's consultation on its latest rail strategy last week, the group criticised the authority for not going far enough and called for the county to work with its partners to deliver a better deal for Bromsgrove and surrounding villages.
Highlighting issues such as the continuing delays to the extension of the cross city line, poor parking facilities at smaller stations and the lack of connectivity to local bus services, the group has told the authority it must do better.
Whilst the Lib Dem submission welcomed potential for additional connectivity to cities such as Bristol and Manchester, it argued that the focus for service improvements needs to be on principal commuter destinations such as Birmingham.
Local Lib Dem campaigner Rob Hunter said 'There is no point punishing people for travelling by car when there is no other option. Instead we must make our public transport more attractive and affordable to tempt people away from polluting cars and reward long suffering bus and rail users. As a daily rail commuter myself, I really want to see an end to severe overcrowding on trains and more frequent services across rail and bus networks.'
Fellow activist Siobhan Hughes added: 'Is it any wonder that parts of Bromsgrove are monitored for higher than average levels of air pollution when two thirds of commuters travel by car. I'm really worried about the impact this will have on our local environment and people's health. We can and must do better'.
